Assisted Living Tips: When is it Time to Consider a Nursing Home or Assisted Living Center?

Assisted Living in Garden Ridge Texas. Assisted Living in San Antonio, Texas

Every family has to find their own way for dealing with aging parents. Some families are equipped financially, emotionally, and with adequate living space to care for aging parents at home. If this works for you, that's wonderfu.

But it doesn't work for everyone.

Not all parents are easy to care for. Some parents push their families to the breaking point, emotionally. Some families have limited living space and small children. Every family has to make its own assesment. And if the time comes when you need to put mother or father into a nursing or assisted living facility, people often feel guilty.

Here are some general tips:

  1. Do not give up your natural inclination to feel responsible for your family. You ARE responsible. And you should give time and effort to caring for your parents if they need you.
  2. Be realistic about what you can do. If caring for your parents in their home or yours is not realistic or would be destructive, be honest about that.
  3. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Take the time needed to find out about professional care facilities. You will feel much better knowing that mom or dad is in a good, clean, safe environment.
  4. Communicate with your siblings. Come to a joing agreement.
  5. Seek wise counsel with clergy or therapists.

This is not an easy decision, but it is a decision we often cannot avoid.

Assisted Living Elder Care Tips: Caregiving Changes Your Life

Experienced Caregivers known the truth. Caregiving is HARD. It changes your whole life. It is emotionally taxing. The health of the caregiver suffers sometimes to the point where the caregiver is sicker than the one being cared for.

The Mayo Clinic has recently released an article noting the significant toll that caring for others places on us. According to the article, more than 15 million people set their own lives aside for a time to care for a loved one.

Basically, [caregiving is] all about change. It's inevitable. Change either breaks into your life, or you open the door and invite it to sit down and have a cup of tea. It's coming. You can either react or respond. Your ability to manage change is what will make a difference. In a game of sameness versus change, change always wins. It cancels out the stagnant, the static and the complacent.
